Uniformed Instructor
Name: Roz Scott
Occupation: Student
Sea Cadet Unit: Edinburgh
Uniformed instructor and ex-cadet Roz Scott is a self-confessed TS Royalist addict. “I love sailing tall ships,” she says. “It’s an amazing experience. Ever since I first went to sea in Royalist as a young cadet, I’ve enjoyed the excitement and the teamwork involved.”
Born in Oxford and brought up in Edinburgh, Scott first joined her local Unit, TS Trinity, when she was 13 years old. “I tagged along with several friends,” she says, “just for the sake of it. They all lost interest, I was hooked!”
Roz stayed with the Trinity Unit until she started her degree in architecture at Sheffield University. By the time she left Edinburgh, she’d qualified as a marine engineering instructor. “I started my course at the search and rescue base HMS Gannet in Prestwick,” she says. “The smallest Naval base in the UK.
“As a cadet supervisor, I travelled all across the country assisting with training cadets.”
For a while, Scott even entertained the idea of joining the Navy to train as a marine engineer. “When I really thought about it, I realised that the reason I like the Sea Cadets so much is because I enjoy working with young people. When I moved to Sheffield, I transferred to the local Unit so I could carry on doing what I enjoy.”
And the student life gives her plenty of vacation time to get her Royalist ‘fix’. “I normally spend a few weeks every summer on board the ship, sailing around the coast of Britain,” she says. “When I was a cadet I had very busy holidays from school. I always packed a lot in. Still do. It’s a legacy from my days with Trinity.”
