The Sea Cadets

Commanding Officer

Name: Monica Hill

Occupation: Parent

Sea Cadet Unit: Morecambe
Lt Monica Hill typifies the hard-working, dedicated Unit Commanding Officer who is also a volunteer, but she’s quick to point out that she couldn’t do her job without the support of her team of officers and adult volunteers.

Those in the know claim that Lt Hill goes the extra mile. Two years ago, teachers from the Kirkby Lonsdale-based Underleys School for children with special needs asked Lt Hill and her colleagues to visit the school and make a recruitment presentation. The response was impressive; on the strength of that presentation, six of the children joined the Unit. “The Sea Cadets prides itself on providing equal opportunities for all cadets, regardless of personal circumstances,” says Lt Hill. “We don’t make any fuss, we allow them to integrate and feel comfortable with their involvement.”

Lt Monica Hill first joined the Sea Cadets as a parent helper. In 1986 she moved to St Austell where she took up an administrative support role for TS Hood. In 1999 she and her husband Dave moved to Morcambe, eventually taking control of the Unit and its almost 50-strong complement of cadets.
