Adult Volunteer Staff
Owing to the wide range of subjects and activities taught, the Sea Cadets need instructors and volunteers with a variety of skills; everything from basic administration and DIY to specialist engineering and IT skills.
Volunteers can also earn useful skills and qualifications. Adult instructor courses are run in all the same disciplines taught to the Sea Cadets. Management and training skills as well as vocational qualifications, right up to degree level, are also available at minimal cost to adult volunteers are invaluable in any walk of life.
Broadly speaking there are two types of opportunity for volunteers: uniformed and non-uniformed.
To become a uniformed instructor, candidates must serve a probationary period of nine months. Applicants with previous experience in the armed forces or Merchant Navy can apply for direct entry. Many uniformed instructors are ex-cadets, passing on the skills they learned during their time in the ranks.
The financial support that we receive from the Royal Navy enables us to offer our uniformed volunteers a number of days' training pay each year.
Civilian instructors are non-uniformed volunteers and can apply to join the Corps at any age. Many are introduced to the Sea Cadets when a son or daughter expresses an interest in joining. Quite often, both parent and child will join a Unit, and husband and wife teams are common.
